Do stellar magnetic cycles influence the measurement of precise radial velocities?

Authors: N.C. Santos, J. Gomes da Silva, C. Lovis, C. Melo - http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/0912.2901
Submitted on 15 Dec 2009)

Abstract: The ever increasing level of precision achieved by present and future radial velocity instruments is opening the way to the discovery of very low mass, long period planets (e.g. solar-system analogs). These systems will be detectable as low amplitude signals in radial-velocity (RV). However, an important obstacle to their detection may be the existence of stellar magnetic cycles with similar timescales. Here we present the results of a long term program to measure simultaneously radial-velocities and stellar activity indicators (CaII, H_alpha, HeI) for a sample of stars with known activity cycles. Our results suggest that all these stellar activity indexes can be used to trace the stellar magnetic cycle in solar-type stars. Further to this, we find clear indications that different parameters of the HARPS cross-correlation function (BIS, FWHM, and Contrast) are also sensitive to activity level variations. Finally, we show that though in a few cases slight correlations or anti-correlations between radial-velocity and the activity level of the star exist, their origin is still not clear. We can however conclude that for our targets (early-K dwarfs) we do not find evidence for radial-velocity variations induced by variations of the stellar magnetic cycle with amplitudes significantly above 1 m/s.

FIFA- Shame on you! Boooooo

Once again we see that the obvious and just isn't the main goal of football. How can we trust an institution that's against making the game fair and clean? How can we trust an istitution that doesn't accept criticism? Have you ever tried to write against FIFA on their site as a comment? try...
The Irish have the right to have a re-match! This is common sence for heavens sake!
If there would be any doubts, then i would agree not to repeat the match, but in this case, there is no question about it. Henry won't sleep well at night with his conscience! The ref won't have a clear mind! Fifa shouldn't have a clear mind!
For the sake of trust and transparency, let's have a new Irland-France! Let's prove Fifa isn't corrupt! Let's prove the fact that Platini is Uefa's boss had nothing to do with the ref's decision!

Bocage

Amar dentro do peito uma donzela,
Jurar-lhe pelos céus a fé mais pura;
Falar-lhe conseguindo alta ventura,
Depois da meia noite da janela:

Fazê-la vir cá abaixo, e com cautela
Sentir abrir a porta, que murmura;

Vê-la rendida enfim a amor fecundo;
Ditoso levantar-lhe os brancos folhos;

For the sake of peace, Israel and Palestinians should apologize to each other

By Judea Pearl

It now seems clear that no peace agreement, not even on principles, will be signed by the Israeli-Palestinian negotiating team before some time in 2009.

The two sides are locked in a fundamentally immobile stalemate.

Israel cannot accommodate a sovereign neighbor rocket-range away from its vital airports while militant elements can and vow to use the shelter of sovereignty to accomplish their aims. And Palestinian society, having taught its youngsters for decades that Israel's existence is temporary, is unable to restrain its militants from pursuing their aims, especially under conditions of occupation, when Iran promises to render those teachings a reality.

Yet if movement on the ground is infeasible, movement above it - in the metaphysical sphere of words, metaphors and paradigms - may hold the key to making peace agreements feasible.

The current stalemate hangs on two ideological contentions, Israelis demand for "legitimacy" and Palestinians' demand for "justice."

The legitimacy demanded by Israelis is primarily a litmus test for gauging Arabs' intention to treat peace agreements as permanent. Thus, if the Palestinian Authority agrees to recognize Israel's "historical right to exist," instead of just "right to exist," and if this recognition percolates down to textbook level, Israel's demand for a proof of intention will be largely satisfied.

However, Palestinians have a profound impediment to recognizing Israel's "right to exist," be it historical or de facto, fearing that it would depict their century-old struggle against the Zionist program as a misguided, unjust aggression, thus weakening their own demand for "justice," as embodied in the claimed "right of return."

A possible remedy: A dramatic symbolic action that satisfies the Palestinians' claim to justice, while neutralizing, or substituting for the literal right of return.

Palestinian columnist Daoud Kuttab wrote in the Washington Post, (May 12, 2008): "The basic demand is not the physical return of all refugees but for Israel to take responsibility for causing this decades-long tragedy"

Israeli peace activist Uri Avnery believes that this demand can be satisfied through an open and frank Israeli apology. "... peace between us and the Palestinian people -a real peace, based on real conciliation - starts with an apology" he wrote in Arabic Media Internet Network (June 14, 2008).

"In my mind's eye" he writes "I see the President of the State or the Prime Minister addressing an extraordinary session of the Knesset and making an historic speech of apology:

"MADAM SPEAKER, Honorable Knesset,

"On behalf of the State of Israel and all its citizens, I address today the sons and daughters of the Palestinian people, wherever they are.

"We recognise the fact that we have committed against you a historic injustice, and we humbly ask your forgiveness.

"The burning desire of the founding fathers of the Zionist movement was to save the Jews of Europe, where the dark clouds of hatred for the Jews were gathering ... that would eventually lead to the terrible Holocaust, in which six million Jews perished.

"All this does not justify what happened afterwards. The creation of the Jewish national home in this country has involved a profound injustice to you...

"We cannot ignore anymore the fact that in the war of 1948 - which is the War of Independence for us, and the Naqba for you - some 750 thousand Palestinians were compelled to leave their homes and lands".

Israeli society is not prepared of course to make such an apology. For an Israeli, the formation of the state was the culmination of an organic historical process that admits no apology. Still, many Israelis would be prepared to assume responsibility for some of the consequences of the war, provided the Palestinians assume their share.

To reciprocate, I now take poetic liberty and, following Avnery, appeal to my mind's eye at the same Knesset session.

I see President Abbas waiting for the applause to subside, stepping to the podium and saying:

"MADAM SPEAKER, Honorable Knesset,

"On behalf of the Palestinian people and the future State of Palestine, I address today the sons and daughters of the Jewish nation, wherever they are.

"We recognise the fact that we have committed against you a historic injustice, and we humbly ask your forgiveness.

"The burning desire of the founding fathers of the Palestinian national movement was to liberate Palestine from colonial powers; first, the Ottoman empire and then the British Mandate Authorities. In their zeal to achieve independence they have treated the creation of Jewish national home in this country as a form of colonial occupation, rather than a homecoming endeavor of a potentially friendly neighbor, whose historical attachment to this landscape was not weaker than ours.

"We cannot ignore anymore the fact that the Great Arab Revolt of 1936-1939 has resulted in the British White Paper, which prevented thousands, if not millions of European Jews from escaping the Nazi extermination plan.

Nor can we ignore the fact that, when survivors of Nazi concentration camps sought refuge in Palestine, we were instrumental in denying them safety and, when they finally established their historical homeland, we called the armies of our Arab brethren to wipe out their newly created state. Subsequently, in our zeal to rectify the injustice done to us we have taught our children that only your demise can bring about the justice and liberty they so badly deserve. Thousands of your innocent citizens were killed, maimed or injured by violence that erupted from this teaching."

Utopian? Of course! Feasible? Most Utopias are. Necessary? Only if we aim at a genuine and lasting peace and, having seen the consequences of interim solutions, neither side can afford to aim for less.

Massive Arms Shipment Intended for Hezbollah Intercepted by Israel Navy

(IDF Spokesman)

Roughly 500 tons of weapons, rockets, and missiles was uncovered aboard the cargo vessel “Francop” flying an Antiguan flag, which was intercepted and brought to the Ashdod port. The Israel Navy force which intercepted the ship included naval commandos, missile boats, intelligence and explosive experts.

36 shipping containers with 500 tons of weaponry were found on the ship disguised as civilian cargo, and hidden among hundreds of other containers onboard.

Israel Naval and Engineering Corps forces are currently unloading the containers and are sorting through the various types of weaponry found aboard.

The naval commando force boarded the vessel and conducted an initial search. The search was conducted in accordance with the usual search protocols as dictated by International Law.

Following the initial search and after it became clear that the vessel was carrying weapons, the vessel was directed by the Israel Navy to dock at the Israeli Ashdod Naval base for additional searches and a detailed inspection of the hull’s cargo. It should be emphasized that the captain of the ship agreed to the search. The Israel Navy conducted all activity without any force.

The weapons found onboard the ship originate from Iran, and were intended for the Hezbollah terror organization, for use against the State of Israel and its citizens. The weapons uncovered at sea last night constitute a harsh violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 1747 and 1701 that strictly forbid Iran from exporting or trading any form of weapons.

This is a well-known Iranian technique, taking advantage of cargo ships flying different flags in order to smuggle containers loaded with large amounts of highly volatile weaponry to terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah.

Following the necessary inspections of the boat, it is expected to be released.

The overnight operation was authorized by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense of the State of Israel. Commander of the Israel Navy, Maj. Gen. Eliezer Marom, commanded the operation from a forward command cell. The IDF Chief of the General Staff authorized the operation, after the confirmation of intelligence information gathered by the IDF.

Iranian-Exported Weapons Seized aboard the "Francop" by the Israel Navy

1. On the night between 3-4 November 2009, the Israel Navy seized the vessel Francop, which was sailing under the flag of Antigua and Barbados and destined for Syria with a planned stopover in Beirut. From an inspection carried out onboard, with the agreement of the relevant authorities, several containers of Iranian origin were found to be carrying weapons. A request was made for the vessel to sail to Ashdod port for further inspection. The captain of the ship agreed to this request.

2. UN Security Council Resolution 1747 prohibits weapons export from Iran. The existence of Iranian weapons in the containers represents, therefore, a severe violation of this resolution.

3. This violation is one of many violations of UN Security Council Resolutions by Iran. Iran continues to systematically ignore UNSC Resolutions, supplying weapons to terror organizations.

4. This incident proves once again that any entity that conducts business, directly or indirectly with the Iranian regime or with the Iranian shipping company IRISL, runs the risk of violating UN Security Council Resolutions.

The Francop, owned by the Cypriot shipping company UFS, was carrying containers marked IRISL (Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines), as can be clearly seen in these pictures of the seized ship in Ashdod port:

Video: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/8341737.stm

In the past few months, other ships carrying IRISL cargo, such as the Russian vessel Monchegorsk and the German ship Hansa India, were apprehended while smuggling weapons.

5. Under the guise of legitimate commerce, and by using ships, flags and ports of blameless countries, Iran is turning the Mediterranean into a base for its nefarious activities, with the aim of destabilizing regional security, as has recently come to light in the cases of the Monchegorsk and the Hansa India.

Countries should take preventive measures in order to protect themselves and their companies, as mentioned in UNSC resolutions. The designation of IRISL by the government of UK last month is a good example of such a preventive measure.

6. Iran is challenging the authority of the UN Security Council, and is mocking the international community and its institutions. Immediate and decisive action is required to stop the illegal activities of Iran and its partners.

7. Iran represents a strategic threat to world peace and stability. The international community must act resolutely against Iran's indefatigable efforts to achieve a military nuclear capability, to support terror organizations and suppress its own population. The Hamas test-flight of a rocket with an extended range of 60 km. serves as confirmation of the danger posed by Iran to Middle East stability.

8. As it appears that the weapons were destined for terrorist organizations in Lebanon, it seems apparent that this is also a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Despite UNSCR 1701, the transfer of weapons from Iran and Syria to Hizbullah is continuing unmolested, including the intent to transfer new and dangerous weapon types.
